Two Back-burner Pet Items & One New Perspective

by admin on November 25, 2010

I remember back when I got my first puppy – those beautiful eyes, floppy ears, and the $500 in items from PetSmart. I went in there and literally just went around the store looking for what I would think she needed, but one thing I’ve really noticed is that I overlooked two main things. First of all we had purchased a “cage” for her to sleep in, stay in while we were out, etc. This wasn’t too bad but I just wasn’t thinking ahead what-so-ever. If I was smart I would have ended up purchasing one of the pet carriers that PetSmart had, or shopped online for one. But of course, I simply did not think that far ahead.

Another thing that I completely overlooked was all of their pet beds – I never really thought that our pup would use it. I just thought that she would either be sleeping in the cage or sleeping in bed with us. Needless to say I, of course, ran out and purchased one about two weeks later for her and she was addicted to it like she was to treats. It was her “idle spot” – she would stay there when she wasn’t doing too much else, was bored (and we weren’t around), etc. Ended up being a really good purchase for her. I don’t regret it one bit other than how much we paid for it; another example of how I should have shopped online for it.

The one new perspective that I gained from this pup was certainly the pet toys. Every toy I thought she’d like she wouldn’t, every toy that said “indestructible” definitely wasn’t (thanks, Kong). It became a little like being an investor. I would throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks, I’d purchase 5 or so toys and see which ones she’d play with for more than the first hour – assuming it actually survived past an hour. So needless to say it got harder and harder as I got more knowledgeable on the toys so once again I started purchasing them online from various retailers to not only find the best price, but check the reviews from other purchasers. It ended up being a good experience overall once I got the system finalized for it.
