Is Pet Health Insurance A Good Idea?

by admin on January 12, 2010

A lot of people buy health insurance for themselves and their children, but not that many people buy this kind of insurance for their pets. Whether you should buy pet health insurance has to be a personal decision – but some people find it a better idea than others. Depending on how many pets you have and your financial situation, pet health insurance can be a very wise choice.

The Cost Of Pet Health Insurance

How much you’ll pay for pet health insurance depends on several factors. The age of your pet matters, of course, because younger pets tend to have fewer health problems. What type of pet you have, whether it’s been spayed or neutered, and if it has any preexisting conditions also matters when it comes to cost. You may also pay more for certain breeds of dog or cat because they have more genetically-predisposed health problems.

What Does Pet Health Insurance Cover?

If you want to get insurance for your pet, it’s important to know what it covers. Not all pet insurance plans are created equally. In other words, you’ll have choices to make regarding your pet’s health insurance, depending on how much you want to spend and what conditions or issues you really want to cover.

Which Pets Should You Cover?

Covering all of your pets might not be possible, depending on how many pets you have. If that’s the case it’s best to cover the oldest pets and any that are genetically predisposed to be sicker as they age because of their breed or other factors.

Pet insurance can be a great idea for people who want to avoid paying out a lot of money if their pet gets sick. However, like any insurance it seems a bit of a waste of money if you don’t use it. In the end, your own financial situation will dictate whether pet insurance is right for you.

I think its a great idea! :) Pet health insurance is definitely useful and can save you money in case accidents or illnesses ever arise..because you never really know or plan for them to happen.

I enrolled my Yorkie earlier this year after doing a lot of research and shopping around for policies and signed up with Trupanion pet insurance . They have been very helpful already, as we had to file an accident claim for Stuey. I don’t know what i would have done if he wasn’t insured because having him insured, I was reimbursed within a few days.

What I like about trupanion is that you can pick your own deductible so you can budget it correctly, they pay 90% of your vet bill, their premiums don’t increase with pets age, as it does with most other companies, and they cover hereditary and congenital disorders.

Pets are a part of my family and i think pet insurance is important to have. Definitely worth looking into i think. :)

oh, and also..a really good site i found with unbiased reviews is http://www.petinsurancereview.com
