Electric Dog Fence – What, Why, When, and How.

by admin on November 28, 2009

The typical family that looks into how to contain their pet in the back yard, front yard and beyond usually looks into a physical fence. Is that what you really want? It’s definitely good to look into something such as an electric dog fence. Usually these fences are invisible (in other words, under ground) and most people won’t even know they’re there. Your pets will soon learn the boundaries they’re allowed to go to, and is a good way to contain them within certain lines without messing up the aesthetics of your yard. So what exactly are these electric dog fences, how much do they cost, and where do you get them? Let’s go over the information that you’ll need when looking into such products.

What is an electric dog fence, and why would I use it?

An electric dog fence is a technology that is usually put into a dug trench in the ground. Usually marked by flags in the beginning so you know where they are, they emit a signal that corresponds with your pet’s collar. If the pet gets within broadcast range of the fence, it will send a slight shock to the animal telling he/she to back up. This is a good way to keep your pet within the limits that you set and soon they will know the boundaries on their own, hardly ever getting shocked by the collar. By using an electric or invisible dog fence you can help contain your pet within the boundaries. This is also a great deterent to people thinking of trespassing in your yard. Nothing is more scary than a German Shepherd running at you full steam without a fence in between you and it. He knows where to stop, and you think he won’t.

When should I get an electric dog fence?

Getting an electric dog fence can be done at any time. Usually people will get them when they first move into a house, or if they’re buying a dog that is over the age of a puppy. You don’t want to put a collar like this on a pup. As long as they’re able to be trained, you may not even need a tool like this at all. Some people with dogs will swear up and down that this is the best investment they can make. Others will argue that it’s cruelty to animals (keep in mind you CAN adjust the power settings! It doesn’t always do the “deathly shock”). It’s all up to the actual individual to decide their own morals and personal requirements before ordering something such as this.

How can I get an electric dog fence?

Electric dog fences can be ordered online through several outlets and online retailers. It can also be picked up in pet stores such as PetSmart and PetCo. It all comes down to how fast you want it, and if you want it professionally installed by a team or are able to do it yourself. They also have a number of different types so if you didn’t want a full fence but merely something where it “shocks” the dog when you press a button, they have those as well.

One of the best ones that I’ve seen in a while is the Instant Fence by Radio Systems, Corp. I’ve checked a lot of prices and one of the cheapest I’ve found is by our affiliate Pet Meds Surplus. Here’s the link to the product page where it’s $258.19 at the time of this post, with roughly $14 in shipping costs. Out the door price is around $273. Check it out, let us know if you have any questions – we can get most of the questions answered from them fairly quickly.
